• Petition to End Common Area Speakers at Southeastern Louisiana University

    50,048 of 100,000 signatures

Every Thursday there is a group of people that meet outside the Student Union at Southeastern University. Some of the people within this group are not students of the University and harass those around them. They yell their beliefs at students and even try to provoke them with prejudiced questions. At one point, they have held signs degrading the female sex. There have been several testimonies of students feeling unsafe from this group and have felt scared to go to the Student Union in fear they will be harassed. Though there is the factor of freedom of speech, no student should feel scared on campus, especially from a group not affiliated with the university. The purpose of this petition is to make the university aware of the issue and try to eliminate this group or reduce it to be more peaceful in respect for others on campus.

  • Popeyes Buffet in Lafayette, LA must not let the buffet fly the coop!

    50,048 of 100,000 signatures

We, the Popeyes chicken lovers of Louisiana, nay, the world, must make our intentions known to keep the last Popeyes buffet open for future generations.

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, formerly known as Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken and Biscuits, is a fast food fried chicken staple in Louisiana. It was started by one man named Al Copeland in Arabi, LA in 1972 and over 1500 franchises have spread worldwide ever since. However, there is only ONE buffet style Popeyes remaining and it must not be erased from existence.

In an article written by DJ Digital on February 1, 2021, the fate of the Popeyes buffet is now in jeopardy.

    https://1079ishot.com/popeyes-buffet-lafayette-future-uncertain-covid/

The COVID-19 pandemic closed many restaurants due to statewide restrictions but they are making a comeback. Buffet style restaurants have yet to reopen. According to the article, a manager stated the buffet is not going to be reopened. It also states a new management group has taken over and are “still undecided on the post-COVID fate of the last remaining Popeyes buffet in the world.“

I am starting this petition to make sure the decision is a favorable one for all of the Popeyes fried chicken fans. The Popeyes buffet has become a tourist attraction in Lafayette. Spread the word that we NEED this institution to reopen and remain open for the foreseeable future.

    P. S. - Let’s try and get the Cajun rice and green beans back on the menu and definitely back on the buffet!

  • Rent Stabilization Policy in Louisiana

    50,048 of 100,000 signatures

    - There is no standard of tenant treatment and no rent control policy.
    - Landlords are able to request tenants vacate in 5 days if they are late on rent or unable to pay, even though landlords are able to change rent at any time.
    - Women and people of color are disproportionately being affected by the lack of support for renters in New Orleans.
    - Many are displaced from their homes, which exacerbates the gentrification problem in New Orleans

Rent stabilization in Louisiana would fight against gentrification and ensure that Louisianans are treated fairly by landlords regarding rent increases.

Rent control promotes neighborhood stability, property value improvements, and income diversity. Louisiana renters deserve more rights.

  • Make the University of Louisiana at Lafayette a Sanctuary Campus

    50,048 of 100,000 signatures

    Dear President Savoie,

We, the community of UL Lafayette, wish to express our commitment to an environment that is supportive, welcoming, and respectful for students of different religious backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identifications, and immigration statuses.

This letter outlines specific actions our university can take publicly to express its commitment to the security and safety of all students and especially of those benefiting from DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). The legitimacy of DACA has been threatened by the Trump administration, and here at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, without the provisions afforded by DACA, undocumented students who have excelled in and outside of the classroom will be denied the opportunity to continue their studies and complete their degrees.

We call on you to declare the University of Louisiana at Lafayette to be a sanctuary campus. On a sanctuary campus, the administration, faculty, and staff establish services and a welcoming climate for students of color, Muslims, Jewish people, LGBTQ students, and women. Campus police and managers of data also decline to cooperate with federal agents wishing to deport undocumented students.

We wish to express public support for DACA (undocumented) students and their families, and we request that the administration of the university take the following actions:

    1. Ensure that the identities of undocumented members of our community continue to be protected.

    2. Assign an administrative office the responsibility for counseling DACA students on their educational situations. Advertise that DACA student counseling services are available on a strictly confidential basis.

    3. Make ULL a sanctuary campus that protects the undocumented from deportation or detention.

    4. Continue to allow qualifying undocumented students to pay in-state resident tuition where possible.

    5. Invest in training faculty and staff to support undocumented students.

    6. Refuse all voluntary information sharing with ICE (US Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and CBP (US Customs and Border Protection) across the university to the fullest extent possible under the law.

    7. Refuse ICE physical access to all land owned or controlled by the university.

    8. Prohibit campus security from inquiring about or recording an individual’s immigration status, enforcing immigration laws, or participating with ICE and CBP in actions.

    9. Prohibit housing discrimination based on immigration status.

    10. Take these measures during the current semester (in other words, immediately) so that DACA students can be assured of institutional support.

We ask you to consider these measures in the spirit of defending our students and affirming our commitment to shared values of inclusion and justice. In this time of uncertainty, the security of students should be considered a high priority.

Those signing this petition agree with the demands of this letter and the push to make ULL a sanctuary campus.

  • The resignation of United States Senator Bill Cassidy.

    50,048 of 100,000 signatures

Senator Bill Cassidy has proven to be an incompetent legislator. His refusal to support election integrity and join with Democrats and Mitt Romney is the last straw. Please support your freedoms and tell our elected officials it is not ok to be an incompetent, weak, and ineffective leader. In the new age of a Biden Presidency, all RINOs, weaklings, and ignorant politicians have to go just to preserve what little liberty we have left. We can no longer leave our trust sit idol in the hands of out of touch politicians. Senator Cassidy might be a fine Doctor, but he is a nightmare as a Senator.

Demand the resignation of United States Senator Bill Cassidy!

  • Housing Rights for Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence In Louisiana

    50,048 of 100,000 signatures

We are a Tulane University class working with the Lousiana Fair Housing Action Center to demand that Louisiana State Legislators expand and update Act 456.

Too many Louisianians are left without adequate protection of their housing rights due to domestic violence, and laws currently in place prioritize the interests of landlords over the needs of survivors.

Domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness for women and children, and the need for safe and affordable housing is one of the most commonly reported concerns for survivors of domestic abuse across the nation. Among mothers with children experiencing homelessness, more than 80% had previously experienced domestic violence

The economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this problem, with many domestic violence victims having secured safe housing away from their abusers, only to lose their jobs and face eviction as a result of the pandemic.

It is time for a new, better law to protect survivors of intimate partner violence from eviction.

On January 1, 2021 my 4 year old son was ran over in the parking lot of Bedico Supermarket in Ponchatoula Louisiana. • Save Djibril Coulibaly from unfair deportation!

    50,048 of 100,000 signatures

Djibril Coulibaly came to Louisiana 19 years ago after being recruited to work as a French teacher. He settled in Opelousas, LA with his wife and subsequently had three children. One of his children has special needs. He has since moved to Thibodaux, LA where he continues to teach and also to coach soccer. His family is Westernized and his children attended Catholic schools; hence he faces potential religious persecution in his country of origin.

Due to an error by his employer, a visa was not properly renewed. He has shown up for every immigration hearing and done everything right, yet he was captured recently and now faces deportation. You can read more details by Googling his name and reading the very detailed article by journalist Katy Reckdahl - unfortunately I am not able to copy it onto this petition.

This man does not deserve deportation! Please help to keep this travesty from happening.

I have been in Animal Rescue for over 10 years. I have seen the Misery Animals suffered because NO ONE would Stand up for them. I Have also seen the degree some Amazing people will go to save their lives. It is time in 2021 for Laws to be enacted in Louisiana protecting Animals, calling for Mandatory Spay/Neuter, and calling for Law Enforcement to ENFORCE Animal Cruelty Laws, and enact Breeder Fees to eliminate Backyard Breeding. Breeder fees should be $5000 a year. Thats very similar to Laws in other States. Rescues for Animals should not have to BEG for Money to save animals. We also should not have to kill ourselves to transport Animals up North where the same laws are enforced. Louisiana is a National Embarrassment. PERIOD!!!! So lets Change it.

  • Help finding the missing crew of the vessel that capsized in the Gulf

    50,048 of 100,000 signatures

I decided to start this petition to help with the recovery efforts for the Seacor vessel that capsized in the Gulf of Mexico on April 13th. The United States Coast Guard conducted a search and rescue mission that was suspended on April 19th. The family members, of this crew, were left to find resources on their own. The United Cajun Navy stepped in and offered their assistance. Funds were/are being raised to pay for fuel to keep boats and seaplanes active in this search. Our tax dollars pay for resources that are not being utilized. i.e. the coast guard. I am asking for your signature on this petition in hopes that we can get the Coast Guard reactivated in this search effort. Please keep in mind that the Coast Guard has resources such as helicopters and boats that the private citizens don't have. WE pay for these resources and it is not too much to ask that these resources be utilized in an effort to help these families bring their loved ones home. Thank you in advance for your signature.

  • Pet rescue and adoption

    50,048 of 100,000 signatures

I have consistently needed a canine, yet realized it would be a major duty and responsibility. A quarter of a year prior, I chose to receive a pup, Brownie. From that point forward, I have found that having a canine is a great deal of work however is fulfilling. To receive a canine, you should ensure you are prepared for the commitments, set up your home and yard, pick a selection organization, and take legitimate consideration of your canine when you bring it home. Before you receive a canine, there are various things you ought to consider. You should ensure you are monetarily fit for purchasing and thinking about a canine. Canines are a major duty and involve numerous expenses. I didn't understand how much cash I would need to spend to get Bella gotten comfortable her new home. The reception expense itself … show more substance…You need to choose which organization to utilize. Pet Savers is a nearby and well known association in Shreveport that salvages deserted or undesirable pets. You can go to Pet Savers and round out an application or round it out on the web. Pet Savers is additionally at PetSmart once every month. I received Bella from Louisiana Baby Mommas, which spends significant time in safeguarding pregnant canines and young doggies that frequently need nonstop checking and container taking care of. Bella's mom was protected from a stream and brought forth her not long after that. LA Baby Mommas stood apart to me since they have a Facebook page where you can see the entirety of their salvages. This association has appropriation occasions at Petco once every month.Significance of Breeding and Adopting Many individuals accept that the best way to get a pet is to "get" one without considering embracing, which is the reason I accept individuals ought to think about looking into better alternatives and become more educated. There are such countless reasons why somebody shouldn't accepting a pet from a reproducer, thus numerous advantages from receiving a pet from your neighborhood cover/creature salvage. In the first place, I accept that selling a canine/feline ought to become illegal. It is unreasonable to raise helpless creatures who most likely would prefer not to be pregnant or get pregnant. Not exclusively is it hurting the pet itself, yet our locale also. As per PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) says that inbreeding causes agonizing and dangerous

    1. Since you'll save a day to day existence.

Every year, it's assessed that more than one million adoptable canines and felines are euthanized in the United States, essentially in light of the fact that such a large number of pets come into covers and too couple of individuals think about reception when searching for a pet.

The quantity of euthanized creatures could be decreased significantly if more individuals embraced pets as opposed to getting them. At the point when you embrace, you save a caring creature by making them part of your family and open up sanctuary space for another creature who may frantically require it.

    2. Since you'll get an incredible creature.

Creature sanctuaries and salvage bunches are overflowing with cheerful, solid pets simply trusting that somebody will take them home. Most safe house pets ended up there as a result of a human issue like a move or a separation, not on the grounds that the creatures did anything incorrectly. Many are now house-prepared and used to living with families.

    3. Since it'll cost you less.

Typically when you receive a pet, the expense of fix/fix, first immunizations (and some of the time in any event, microchipping!) is remembered for the appropriation value, which can save you a portion of the in advance expenses of adding another part to your family. Contingent upon the creature, you may likewise save money on housebreaking and preparing costs.

    4. As a result of the boasting rights.

Nobody needs to see another selfie—except if it's a selfie of you with the lovable pet you just embraced! Receive a pet, post those photos and let the very much acquired preferences move in.

Pet appropriation is the way toward assuming liability for a pet that a past proprietor has relinquished or delivered to an asylum or salvage association. Normal hotspots for adoptable pets are creature sanctuaries and salvage gatherings. A few associations give adopters responsibility for pet, while others utilize a guardianship model wherein the association holds some command over the creature's future use or care. Individuals manage their undesirable pets from numerous points of view. A few people have the pet euthanized (otherwise called taking care of down or putting), albeit numerous veterinarians don't believe this to be a moral utilization of their assets for youthful and sound creatures, while others contend that killing is a more others conscious alternative than leaving a pet in a pen for extensive stretches of time. Others essentially discharge the pet into the wild or in any case forsake it, with the assumption that it will have the option to deal with itself or that it will be found and received. All the more regularly, these pets surrender to hunger, climate, traffic, or normal and treatable medical issues. A few people euthanize pets as a result of terminal ailments or wounds, while others even do it for basic medical issues that they can't, or won't, pay to treat. More capable proprietors will take the pet to a haven, or call a salvage association, where it will be thought about appropriately until a home can be found. Another strategy is rehoming (finding another proprietor). Purposes behind giving up a pet might be because of sensitivities, the pet-proprietor's passing, separate, the introduction of a child, or migration.

Homes can't generally be found, nonetheless, and willful extermination is regularly utilized for the abundance creatures to prepare for fresher pets, except if the association has a no-murder strategy. The Humane Society of the United States appraises that 2.4 million solid, adoptable felines and canines are euthanized every year in the US on account of an absence of homes. To help bring down the quantity of creatures euthanized every year, a few safe houses have built up a no-execute strategy. Closest Friends Animal Society is the biggest no-murder cover in the United States who embraces strategies, for example, "Save Them All". Like this asylum and numerous others, they endeavor to keep their creatures as long as it takes to discover them new homes. City sanctuaries and government financed protects seldom have this approach on account of the enormous number of creatures they get. No-slaughter covers are generally run by bunches that have volunteers or people with enough space to encourage pets until a lasting home can be found. Nonetheless, a considerable lot of these gatherings and people have a limited number of spaces accessible. This implies they won't take in new creatures except if a space opens up, despite the fact that they will regularly reclaim pets that they have embraced out beforehand. Now and then they attempt to discover the creatures cultivate homes, in which the creature is set in a home briefly until somebody embraces it.

  • OUR OCEAN IS THE CLIMATE HERO. STOP THE OFFSHORE OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION APPLICATION ER236

    50,048 of 100,000 signatures

OUR OCEAN IS THE CLIMATE HERO - STOP THE OFFSHORE OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION APPLICATION ER236

We call on the Minister for the Environment Barbara Creecy, to withdraw her approval of Italian oil corporation ENI and Sasol’s application (ER236), for exploratory drilling offshore of Richards Bay and Scottburgh. This application is part of the offshore oil and gas sector of a government economic development program, Operation Phakisa.

These companies, with poor safety reputations[i], were given the go ahead to drill at record depths[ii] in the Agulhas Current, known to be one of the strongest in the world. The KZN wells are planned to be between 3,8 – 4,1 km deep offshore Richards Bay and 5,1 km offshore Scottburgh.

Operation Phakisa promises to deliver nine billion barrels of oil, and eleven billion barrels of oil equivalent of gas, from the offshore wells. However, by continuing with the offshore oil and gas development program, the minister is failing to properly manage our exposure to climate and pollution risks. Offshore application ER236 risks:

Melting over a hundred square kms of Arctic ice
Acoustic pollution and trauma from seismic surveys[iii]
    Oils spills[iv] and chronic pollution[v]
    Introducing invasive species[vi]
Disturbing our coastal and marine ecosystems[vii]

South Africa is heating at twice the global average and is emitting twice the global average CO2. It is likely we will reach a 3℃ increase this decade, becoming hotter and drier, with more extreme weather shocks.

THE OCEAN IS THE REASON WE ARE ALIVE:

It has absorbed 90% of greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions, but cannot absorb all the heat added by these emissions.
Surface temperature is heating up 24 times faster than a few decades ago and keeps accelerating.
Absorbing CO2 causes water to become more acidic, corroding protective animal shells and corals.
More CO2 affects sea water circulation by slowing it down, causing less oxygen circulating. Without oxygen even more species will die.
The Minister for the Environment has completely side-stepped the critique that there has been no Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) for the offshore oil and gas sector in South Africa – broadly recognized as an important tool to promote sustainability-driven decision making[viii]. She has failed to explore energy alternatives and excluded the environmental and socioeconomic consequences of this exploration to our climate future.

The Minister for the environment’s approval does nothing to protect the already heavily compromised sea, upon which we all rely, nor break down the massive political barriers to decarbonising electricity generation in South Africa.

As South Africans we demand a reduction of emissions by ½ by 2030. We demand Minister Creecy withdraw her approval of ER236 before it’s too late.

  • Help Lower Carbon Emissions in Louisiana

    50,048 of 100,000 signatures

I would like to solve the problem of burning fossil fuels in Louisiana. There are many companies that burn fossil fuels for money. But unfortunately, burning fossil fuels releases greenhouse gasses into the environment which traps heat in the atmosphere which then causes things like drought, desertification, and wildfires.

When my petition has 5,000 signatures, I will send it to Governor John Bell Edwards of Louisiana to incentivize burning fossil fuels in Louisiana which will reduce the carbon emissions of Louisiana by a lot. I have done a lot of research and I would like for you to see some of my research. Some companies really do care about how much carbon they release into the environment, but as it turns out, not all companies care about their carbon footprint. It's our responsibility to try to decrease our carbon footprint and we can do that by limiting the carbon footprint of major companies.

The reason that I did this research is because it is a project for my school's exhibition fair. The rest of my research is in my exhibition paper. A link to the exhibition research paper will be included after it has been turned in.

  • A Call for the Resignation of Senator Bill Cassidy

    50,048 of 100,000 signatures

On February 13th 2021, Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy voted for the illegal and unconstitutional impeachment of Donald J. Trump, who is arguably the most popular Republican president in history and who received more votes from Louisiana citizens than any candidate in history in the 2020 presidential election. It is clear that Senator Cassidy does not have the interests of Louisiana citizens at heart and will have no meaningful ability to represent her citizens going forward. It is for this reason that we the people of Louisiana demand the resignation of Senator Bill Cassidy immediately.

Furthermore, we call on every Louisiana Parish Republican Executive Committee and the Republican Party of Louisiana to censure Senator Bill Cassidy and to similarly demand his immediate resignation from office.
